Are you ready to be part of this? Right now, we're looking for people to join the Consumer Council Team that represent the interests of health consumers their whnau and communities.
The purpose is to enable appropriate consumer participation alongside liaison with the health system and services within South Canterbury. The team receive, consider and disseminate information and feedback from and to Te Whatu Ora South Canterbury, consumer groups and communities. Stakeholders include the Quality and Risk team along with the Director of Health and Hospital Services - Te Whatu Ora South Canterbury.
The guiding principles for the Consumer Council are derived from the Health Quality and Safety Commissioner Code of Expectations alongside the current Ng paerewa Health and Disability services standard documentation. The code of expectations for health entities' engagement with consumers and whnau (the code) sets the expectations for how health entities must work with consumers, whnau and communities in the planning, design, delivery and evaluation of health services. This code is required by the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2022 and is underpinned by the health sector principles.
All health entities must act in accordance with the code and are required to report annually on how the code has been applied. The health sector principles incorporate Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) principles identified by the Waitangi Tribunal in its Hauora Inquiry. These include the principles of tino rangatiratanga (self-determination), ritetanga (equity), whakamaru (active protection), kwhiringa (options) and ptuitanga (partnership).
The group meet approximately 6-8 times per year and these meetings can take up to 3 hours a time. There is a payment of $50 per hour for this part of the role. There may be extra work outside meeting times, such as reading and research.
The meetings are held in the Gardens Block of Timaru Hospital. This is a two-year term for each role with a renewal for a further two years. The Consumer Council are an all-inclusive group and welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds such as those with disabilities, from different ethnic groups, LGBTQIA.
