As a Geohazard Analyst you will work as a first responder in an operational setting, providing timely advice to help manage New Zealands geohazard risks. Te Puna Mrearea I te R / The National Geohazards Monitoring Centre (NGMC) The NGMC is the rapid event response branch of GNS Science. Using the best operationalised science available, the NGMCs mission is to provide pertinent and rapid intelligence to decision-makers in civil defence and emergency management agencies.
There are five teams of four Geohazard Analysts in the Centre. The current teams are a close-knit group who embrace the values of psychological safety and mutual support. In this role, you will: Locate and respond to earthquakes Monitor warning systems for volcanic unrest/eruption Use tools to identify tsunamigenic threats Maintain situational awareness Have an Agile mindset Be comfortable following standard operating procedures Be willing to travel to back up sites several times a year Communicate information about significant events to duty officers and experts Liaise directly with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) The working environment can be fast paced and exciting especially when dealing with events of national significance.
