In-house development opportunity for employment counsel with a growth mindset Interesting and diverse work as part of a supportive and collaborative team Permanent role, ideally based in Auckland, but open to other locations within NZ Competitive salary; commitment to work/life balance; flexibility and hybrid working Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity The Employment Relations (ER) team is a Centre of Excellence that fosters productive relationships between NZTA | Waka Kotahi and its people. The ER team champions organisational values, effectively manages conduct risk, and establishes transparent employment practices that are compliant with statutory frameworks, create a safe and engaged culture, and align with our purpose, vision, and strategic priorities. As Senior Employment Counsel, you will support the NZTA | Waka Kotahi Employment Relations team to provide high quality, credible employment advice to the business and wider People, Culture & Safety function.

This will include conducting workplace investigations, handling protected disclosures, developing operational policy, supporting change, managing projects, enabling regular ER reporting, and advising on high-risk casework. You will be comfortable navigating complex regulatory environments, unionised workforces, and multiple stakeholders. Ko koe tnei | About you To be successful in this role, you will bring: Knowledge and experience 5 years' post-admission experience in legal practice.

A solid understanding of NZ employment legislation, relevant statutory frameworks, and practices. Specialist knowledge of ER processes including investigations, conduct, performance management, and change, as well experience in assessing and resolving complaints and personal grievances. Demonstrated ability to apply sound judgement and commercial acumen to confidential casework and handle sensitive information appropriately.

Strong analytical, drafting, and report writing skills with an eye for detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ability to remain curious, connect with empathy and build influence with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

D Demonstrated skills in negotiating with, and/or influencing unions and/or external legal representatives. Qualifications Bachelor of Law A current New Zealand Law Society practicing certificate (or the ability to apply for and hold one) Other requirements A willingness to travel within New Zealand (on occasion) to fulfill the requirements of the role You will also demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Mori, tikanga, and Te Reo Mori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.
