Are you an experienced engineer with a passion for driving asset performance and delivering complex projects in an industrial setting? We are partnering with a leading organisation in New Zealand's heavy industry sector to recruit a Mechanical Project Engineer with strong technical acumen, project delivery skills, and practical experience in asset management. This role offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic, hands-on environment where your engineering knowledge will directly impact reliability, performance, and operational excellence. Role Purpose This role is responsible for supporting a range of engineering projects, plant upgrades, and reliability initiatives across a large industrial operation.

You'll use your mechanical engineering expertise to contribute to the full lifecycle of projects-from early design and feasibility through to implementation and commissioning. Working alongside multidisciplinary teams in maintenance, operations, and health & safety, you'll help improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and enhance asset lifecycle performance. The role suits professionals from sectors such as pulp & paper, sugar, timber processing, heavy manufacturing, or any environment with complex plant and machinery.

Key Responsibilities Provide mechanical and project engineering input into plant improvement and capital upgrade projects Lead or contribute to project design, planning, cost estimation, procurement, and contractor management Support root cause analysis and fault investigation to reduce downtime and improve equipment reliability Supervise on-site works with a focus on safety, compliance, and quality outcomes Collaborate across departments to drive asset management and reliability improvement strategies Support development of internal engineering standards and contribute to CPD and professional registration (CPEng pathway) Ideal Candidate Will Have A recognised Mechanical Engineering degree (NZ or equivalent) 7 years' experience in a heavy industrial environment-pulp & paper, sugar, or manufacturing sectors highly regarded Proven experience in project engineering, asset management, and site improvements Familiarity with CMMS systems and strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work cross-functionally and with contractors Analytical mindset with a drive for continuous improvement and technical excellence Like to know more?
